Why being your own boss, but not on your own is the dream ticket
That’s the winning combination
I have personally supported over one hundred people become their own boss.
I’ve noticed a few things I was keen to share.
Often people go it alone for autonomy, freedom and complete flexibility. Travel, lifestyle or space to pursue interests like fitness at a scale not possible as an employee on contract.
Others want to be with their family more, spend quality time with their young ones in their formative years. To be present on their own terms, how they want to be.
It could even be just to work as they like, on their schedule. Early rises, night owls, biphasic sleep. Whatever works best for them, and their lifestyle.
Not 9-5, or KPI’s for someone else’s spreadsheet, in an office somewhere an hour away with an expensive, tiresome commute. Earnings sacrificed to pay for things they don’t want or need.
The problem is it can be isolating professionally, and this can cause the biggest problems – loneliness, distraction and a lack of motivation. No ear to chew, to collaborate with, to learn or get advice from, and celebrate the wins.
Being part of a community, and part of something is human nature. To be part of a tribe. To have support when you need it, often in the areas that aren’t their biggest strengths.
I’m seeing recruiters from larger agencies wanting to go it alone. And in the creative industry, setting up their own shop after leaving a hold co.
I’d recommend going it alone. But do it with the right support structure and community around you, so you’re not on your own. That lasts.
That’s the winning combination.
