Attracting top engineering talent takes more than salary
Businesses are competing for talent on an international stage
For years, most UK employers competed for engineering talent within relatively familiar boundaries. Candidates compared opportunities with local businesses, nearby competitors and organisations operating within the same market.
That dynamic has changed.
Remote and distributed working has opened access to global opportunities, allowing highly skilled engineers to consider roles well beyond their immediate geography. As a result, businesses are increasingly competing for talent on an international stage, whether they intended to or not.
While salary remains important, many employers are discovering that compensation alone is no longer enough to attract and retain the strongest technical talent.
Recently, DMCG Global Partner James Anderson shared his perspective on what he is seeing across the Engineering and Cloud markets.

One thing a lot of UK companies are underestimating right now?
Good Engineers don’t just compare your role to another UK company anymore. They’re comparing it to remote US opportunities too, and some of the salary differences are huge.
I’m seeing more and more engineers across:
AI/Cloud Infrastructure
DevOps
Platform
AWS/Azure
Cloud Security
Getting approached by US companies offering significantly more than equivalent UK roles. Which means UK businesses are now competing in a global market whether they like it or not.
And honestly, I don’t think compensation is the only issue, the companies still attracting strong engineers tend to offer:
Interesting technical problems
Modern environments
Real ownership
Good engineering culture
Projects people actually want to work on
Because if the work itself feels boring, slow, or heavily legacy-driven, salary alone probably won’t fix that anymore.
Good engineers have options now. Global ones.
Why this matters:
The best engineering talent has never had more choice.
While salary benchmarking remains important, organisations that focus solely on compensation often overlook the factors that make opportunities genuinely attractive to experienced engineers.
Technical challenge, autonomy, culture, career progression and the opportunity to work with modern technology stacks increasingly influence hiring decisions.
For employers, this means recruitment strategies need to evolve. The organisations winning the competition for talent are often those that can clearly articulate not only what they pay, but why engineers should want to build their careers there.
Hiring needs to reflect this reality.
