AI has quickly moved from experimentation to implementation.

Across technology teams, product functions and leadership groups, discussions around AI are now commonplace. What's becoming increasingly clear, however, is that the challenge is no longer whether businesses want to adopt AI, it's whether they have the talent required to turn ambition into reality.

Many organisations have invested in AI tools, developed strategies and identified potential use cases. Far fewer have the people, the processes and the technical capability that’s needed to successfully deploy AI in production environments.

This is something our Technology Partner James Anderson has been discussing with clients across the UK, Europe and North America - that the biggest challenge facing many organisations isn't AI adoption. It's finding the people capable of turning AI initiatives into real-world outcomes.

Everyone is talking about AI replacing jobs, but I think the real issue is different.

Companies aren’t short on AI ambition. They’re short on people who can turn it into production systems. Not because of budget, but because the talent doesn’t exist at scale yet.

3 roles showing up in real teams:

  • AI Product Engineers: People who can ship AI into production, not just demos. Most hiring still confuses “AI experience” with building reliable systems. Those are very different skills.

  • AI Automation Builders: High-leverage operators quietly removing layers of internal work. Many companies assume this will just be “solved by tools.” It won’t. Systems still need to be designed.

  • AI Translators: This is where CTOs tend to disagree. Some believe this should sit with engineers or leadership directly. But in practice, those groups often don’t speak the same language. Translators turn “we should use AI” into something that actually ships and gets measured. The real gap isn’t ideas. It’s execution capacity, and not every company agrees on where that gap should be filled.

Why this matters:

As AI adoption accelerates, businesses are discovering that success depends on more than access to technology. The ability to identify, attract and retain the right talent is becoming a competitive advantage in its own right.

The organisations making the greatest progress are often those that recognise AI implementation as a people challenge as much as a technology challenge.

Whether hiring AI Product Engineers, automation specialists or individuals capable of bridging the gap between business and technical teams, demand is growing faster than talent supply across many markets.
