When a job search stalls, the instinct is to apply for more roles. More applications, more job boards, more time lost to the "Easy Apply" button.

It feels productive. It often isn't.

LinkedIn's 2025 research backs this up. It found that 41% of job seekers are applying to more roles than ever yet hearing back less. At the same time, 42% of hiring professionals said fewer than half the applications they received fully met the criteria for the role. LinkedIn's own conclusion was blunt. The mass-apply approach is not working, and around 80% of HR professionals agree that finding a new role has become harder.

So, the issue is rarely effort, more often it’s focus.

With that in mind, here are our...

Five ways to get better results without turning your search into a full-time application marathon

1. Be more targeted. Twenty well-matched applications will usually beat a hundred loose ones. Before you apply, be honest with yourself. Do you meet most of the key requirements? Can you explain clearly why you fit? Is this a role you actually want? A sharper list leads to better conversations and stronger interviews.

2. Invest in your network. Not every role reaches a job board. Referrals and professional relationships still drive a lot of hiring, especially at mid, senior and leadership level. Reconnect with former colleagues. Go to industry events. Stay visible on LinkedIn. None of this has to mean asking for a job. It usually starts with a conversation.

3. Choose quality over quantity. A tailored CV will nearly always outperform a generic one. Hiring managers can tell when someone has taken the time to understand the business and the role. A little preparation goes a long way in a crowded market.

4. Work with specialist recruiters. A good recruiter offers market insight, honest feedback and access to roles that are never advertised. The best relationships are built before you urgently need them. Stay in touch with recruiters who know your field.

5. Keep your LinkedIn profile active. Many people spend hours applying while ignoring the profile recruiters actually search. Keep your experience current. Make your headline say what you do. Let the profile show your expertise clearly. Visibility counts.

What you are really after is more of the right conversations, not a bigger pile of applications.

The strongest searches combine a few things - targeted applications, a live network, recruiter relationships, and a clear sense of where your skills add the most value. Applying will always be part of it. Just don't assume that doing more of it is the answer.
